The Bulls and Falcons will clash for the second straight time as the two sides battled to a 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale. This marks the second straight season that the Bulls will take on a team at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field in Akron, OH that they ended the regular season playing. UB ended up on the winning side last season in the rematch as they made their second MAC Championship match in program history.
The Bulls closed out their regular season with an 11-3-3 overall record and a 2-1-2 MAC mark, the most wins in a season since 2008. The Bulls also had three All-MAC performers this season, Russell Cicerone, David Enstrom and Nick Forrester, most since the 2008 campaign.
Cicerone was the spark for the UB offense this season as he led the MAC in scoring as he notched 13 goals, eight assists and 34 points on the year, all career-highs. The Bloomfield Hills, MI native also collected First-Team All-MAC honors for the fourth straight season as he became the first UB player and third player in MAC history to do so.
Senior captain Braden Scales also was a huge contributing factor to the Bulls success in the offensive third of the pitch as he was able to notch a career-high five goals and one assist for 11 points. Freshman Rikard Lindqvist had a strong start to his career as he netted three goals and recorded five assists for 11 points. Junior transfer Tommy Fogarty-Cameron had a strong finish to his season as he has netted two goals and two assists for six points while senior Steven Stryker chipped in with four assists off the bench.
The Buffalo defense has been a strength all season long and a pair of defenders, David Enstrom and Nick Forrester, were rewarded for their strong play with All-MAC recognition. Enstrom earned First-Team All-MAC honors while Forrester earned Second-Team All-MAC honors after the UB defense secured a MAC-high 10 clean sheets on the year. Between the pipes, junior Joseph Kuta had one of the best seasons in UB history as he earned a 11-3-3 record to go along with a 0.79 goals-against average and 10 shutouts, tying Bobby Shuttleworth’s program record for shutouts in a season.
Bowling Green had a strong season as they finished 9-5-4 overall and 2-0-3 in MAC play. The Falcons were also able to collect a perfect home record of 5-0-4 while being just 4-5-0 on the road. The Falcons are led by a pair of First-Team All-MAC performers as Pat Flynn earned the recognition after leading Bowling Green in scoring with five goals and four assists for 14 points while Anthony Mwembia earned first team honors after a strong season between the pipes, owning a 8-5-4 record to go along with a MAC-best 0.66 goals-against average and eight shutouts. Chris Brennan ranked second on the squad in scoring with five goals and two assists while Joe Sullivan started all 18 matches and has notched four goals and three assists.
The winner of Friday’s semifinal matchup will take on the winner of No. 1 seed Akron and No. 4 seed Western Michigan at 1 p.m. Sunday in the MAC Championship match at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
