The Democrat-heavy urban centers in Erie and Monroe counties helped Hillary Clinton secure more than 4 million votes in New York, allowing her to win the state’s 29 electoral votes by a 58.5-37.5 margin over Donald Trump.

Despite the Democratic stronghold in Buffalo, Erie County was barely blue. Just 50.1 percent of voters chose Clinton, while 45.4 perent chose Trump. Another 1.5 percent of voters went with Green Party candidate Jill Stein. Monroe County was slightly kinder to Clinton. There, she took 55.2 percent of votes, compared to 39.3 percent for Trump. Stein carried 1.6 percent of votes in Monroe County.

Trump handily carried the other seven counties in Western New York with vote percentages as follows:

Allegany: 68.4 percent (26.1 Clinton)
Cataraugus: 64.5 pecent (30.1 Clinton)
Chautauqua: 59.4 percent (35.1 Clinton)
Genesee: 65.3 percent (28.4 Clinton)
Niagara: 57.2 percent (38.2 Clinton)
Orleans: 67.9 percent (26.8 Clinton)
Wyoming: 73 percent (22 Clinton)

Trump outperformed his Republican counterparts in all but one of the last five presidential elections. In 2004, George W. Bush received 39.8 percent of the New York vote.
