BUFFALO — Canisius junior guard Kassius Robertson scored a game-high 32 points after hitting eight 3-point field goals, and senior Phil Valenti added 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists as the Golden Griffins defeated Ryerson 99-95 Monday night in an exhibition game in the Koessler Athletic Center.

Nine of the 11 Canisius players that saw time in the game scored at least two points in the win, as the Blue and Gold ended the night shooting 53.1 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point land. Freshman Isaiah Reese came off the bench and scored 11 points for the Griffs, while junior forward Jermaine Crumpton chipped in seven points, four boards, four assists and two steals to the winning effort.

Ryerson, which finished the night shooting 19-for-45 from 3-point land, had three player record double-figures in the scoring column. Roshane Roberts came off the bench to score a team-high 23 points after he went 5-for-10 from behind the arc. Adika Peter-McNeilly and Chase Vassell each scored 20 points in the loss for the Rams.

Canisius trailed 68-67 with 10:48 left to play in regulation time before the Griffs went on a 17-4 run over the span of 3:35, with Robertson and Reese accounting for 14 of the team’s 17 points in the run. Ryerson battled back and cut Canisius’ lead to one at 93-92 with 1:26 left on the clock, but back-to-back buckets by Valenti sealed the victory for Canisius.

Canisius held a 39-30 advantage on the glass, with 15 of those rebounds coming on the offensive end of the floor, and Canisius was credited with 24 assists on 34 made field goals.

Canisius will officially open the 113th season in school history on Sunday, Nov. 13, when the Griffs play at No. 2 Kentucky. Game time in Rupp Arena is set for 6 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
