BUFFALO — Buffalo State women’s hockey held four one-goal leads, but was only able to come away with a 4-4 tie against Plymouth State this evening in the opening day of the Bengals Invitational.
Erin Gehen (W. Seneca, NY/W. Seneca West) had a goal and an assist for Buffalo State, while Madeline Kromer (Angola, NY/Lake Shore), Caitie Horvatits (Elma, NY/Iroquois), and Jessica Carter (Scottsdale, AZ/Brightmont Academy) also scored. Gehen opened the scoring just 18 seconds into the contest, but Buffalo State found itself in penalty trouble for much of the remainder of the opening period. The Panthers evened the score with a power-play goal later in the frame and the score remained 1-1 at the first intermission.
Kromer netted a power-play goal to reclaim the Bengals lead midway through the second, but The Panthers answered again just over a minute later. Horvatis put the Bengals ahead again with a shorthanded breakaway tally in the first half of the third period. Once again, Plymouth State responded to even the score with 6:45 remaining. Carter pounded home a rebound with just over five minutes left to put Buffalo State ahead for the fourth time. The resilient Panthers found a way to even the score one final time, tallying a power-play goal with just 18 seconds remaining to force overtime, and neither team could break through in the extra session.
Buffalo State outshot Plymouth 28-19 for the game, including 14-3 in the second period. The Bengals were just 1 for 11 on the power play, while the Panthers were 2 for 10. Justine Silva (Baldwin Park, CA/Arroyo) finished with 15 saves between the pipes.
Buffalo State will face Nichols Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
