NIAGARA UNIV. — Matt Scott and Marvin Prochet, a pair of Brooklyn natives, have been named captains of the Niagara University men’s basketball team for the 2016-17 season announced by head coach Chris Casey.

“We are pleased to announce Matt and Marvin as captains for the 2016-17 season,” Casey said.  “While our team has a number of players showing leadership, Matt and Marv stood out to emerge as captains.  We look forward to their consistent and effective leadership this season.”

This will be Scott’s second season serving as a captain. Scott had a career-setting sophomore campaign en route to earning 2015-16 All-MAAC Third Team honors. He set career-highs in points, field goals, 3-pointers, free throws, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. Scott led Niagara with 7.1 rebounds per game, 1.3 steals per game and 4.5 free throws made per game, while placing second in assists with 2.5 per game and in scoring with 15.4 points per game. Scott was the team’s leading scorer through the first 30 games of the season. Scott’s six double-doubles were the most by a Purple Eagle since the 2009-10 season. Scott was named to the 2016-17 Preseason All-Big 4 First Team in September

Prochet played in all 32 games, while starting in 28, as a freshman last season. He was third on the team with 7.3 points per game, and second on the team with 5.4 rebounds per game and with 0.8 blocks per game. Prochet set career-highs in scoring twice with 19 points at Hartford and Saint Peter’s. He recorded his first career double-double at Monmouth with a team and career-high 13 rebounds and 10 points. He led the team in scoring three times, rebounds 12 times, steals nine times and blocks 12 times.

The Purple Eagles will open their season on Nov. 11 against Big 4 rival Buffalo at 8 pm. in the Gallagher Center.
