The Canisius volleyball swept the competition this past week, defeating Manhattan and Iona on Saturday and Sunday, and a key player in those wins was freshman Cassidy Ceriani. Because of her efforts the last two matches, the first-year setter was honored as Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, for the first time in her young career.

Ceriani quarterbacked the Griffs offense effectively through the two matches, averaging 9.70 assists per set against the Jaspers and Gaels. Her performance was highlighted by a historic day on Saturday, as Ceriani notched 61 assists, the most a Canisius freshman has recorded since 2004. The total was also the most that any Griff has recorded dating back to 2012 and Sydny Palka’s 63.

On Sunday she was stellar again, notching 36 assists and 19 digs to lead the team in both categories. She notched assist/dig double-doubles in both matches during the weekend.

Ceriani is now ranked fifth in the MAAC in asissts per set with a 7.82 mark and the second-ranked freshman, behind only league-leader Maria Pansari from Quinnipiac.

Canisius is back in action on Thursday night to close out its three-match homestand as the squad faces off against local rival, Niagara. Game time is set for 7 p.m and will be broadcast on on ESPN3.
