CORTLAND — Kyle Hoppy (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) passed for 434 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more scores to lead visiting Buffalo State to a 39-21 victory over Cortland today in an Empire 8 contest.

Hoppy finished 29 of 47 with passing touchdowns of 6, 17 and 5 yards and added two 1-yard rushing touchdowns. Madison Wesolowski (Elma/Iroquois) led the Bengals with 11 catches for 175 yards. Stephen Johnson (Buffalo/McKinley) added six grabs for 114 yards and a touchdown.
Tre Jones (Rochester/Greece-Athena) led the Bengals on the ground with 87 yards on 25 carries and also had a catch for 36 yards. Billy Carroll (Holtsville/Sachem East) had a pair of sacks and an interception for the Bengals against his former team.

Buffalo State racked up 28 first downs, compared to just 11 by Cortland.  The Bengals finished with 575 total yards of offense, compared to just 263 by the Red Dragons. The Bengals marched 78 yards in 11 plays on the opening drive and took a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard run by Hoppy. Cortland took advantage of a short field after a Buffalo State fumble and evened the score later in the first quarter on a 20-yard pass from DeAngelo Walker to Jon Mannix. Hoppy’s second 1-yard scoring run of the game early in the second quarter capped a 14-play, 75-yard drive that gave the Bengals a lead they would never relinquish.

Carroll’s interception set up a 19-yard field goal by Marc Montana (E. Amherst/St. Joe’s) to push the lead to 17-7. Walker hit Jake Smith with a 43-yard scoring strike to cut the deficit to 17-14 before halftime. Hoppy found Jordan Evert (Amherst/Sweet Home) for a 6-yard touchdown and later connected with Johnson for a 17-yard score to extend the lead to 29-14 midway through the third quarter. Johnnie Akins got loose for a 35-yard scored run for Cortland’s final points of the game later in the period. Montana added a 29-yard field goal and the Bengals completed the scoring with a 5-yard pass from Hoppy to Nick Jones (Buffalo/W. Seneca West) in the final minute.

Buffalo State will travel to play Alfred State next Saturday for the first time ever in a non-conference game that will kick off at 1 p.m.
