ANNAPOLIS, MD – The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team went 12-3 in singles action on Friday and won all three doubles matches as the Bulls opened play at the Navy Invitational.

In the “A” singles flight freshman Emel Abibula opened with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Chloe Lee from Rutgers and she moved on to the semifinals after defeating Jessica Josiah of Howard, 6-1, 1-6, 10-5.  In the top half of the bracket, the Bulls picked up four more wins as Tanja Stojanvoska defeated Nicole Shaknazarova from Towson after she retired down, 6-0, 2-0 and sophomore Chantal Martinez Blanco defeated Taylor Nederlander for George Washington, 6-4, 6-2.  Both Stojanovska and Martinez Blanco also won their second round matches on the day to advance.

In the “B” singles flight, sophomore Mercedes Losada Rubio moved into the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kamilla Beisenova of George Washington and a 6-2, 6-2 win over Katie Kim of Seton Hall.  Margarita Kotok won her opening match over Barboara Vasilkova from Towson, 6-3, 4-6, 14-12 before Kotok lost in her second match of the day.

In the “C” singles flight, freshman Anna Savchenko won her opening match 6-2, 6-4 over Paige Leavy from Bucknell and then moved in to the semifinals following a 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 win over Josie Rogers from Navy.  Sophomore Sanjana Sudhir won her first match 6-0, 6-2 over Patricia Eftenoiu from Fairleigh Dickinson before falling in her semifinal match. Sophomore Haley Hollins lost her opening match in the “D” flight.

In doubles, UB picked up a pair of victories in the “A” flight as Savchenko and Martinez Blanco won their open match, 6-2 over the duo from Bucknell, while Stojanovska and Kotok won their first match 7-5 over their opponents from Towson.  Abibula and Losada Rubio won 6-3 in the “B” flight, while Sudhir and Hollins received a bye in the opening round of the “C” flight.

Action will continue at the Navy Invitational Saturday and it will conclude on Sunday.
