Buffalo State’s strong play on the field this season has been rewarded by the SUNYAC today when it was announced that the Bengals swept this week’s Athlete of the Week awards.

Melissa Smith (North Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) and Taylor Carillo (Pine Bush/Pine Push) were named the SUNYAC’s women’s soccer Offensive and Defensive Athlete of the Week, respectively.

Both players were key to the Bengals (6-1-2) perfect 3-0 week that included a 2-0 start to SUNYAC play.

Smith posted two goals and two assists and Carillo extended her shutout streak to 349 minutes, 55 seconds over the three-game week.

Smith, a senior forward, had a goal and an assist in a 3-0 win over D’Youville on Monday, scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Geneseo on Friday, and then assisted on the only goal in a 1-0 win over Brockport on Saturday.

Smith is the reining SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Year and currently sits in a tie for third in the conference for most points (13).  Her five goals and three assists on the year are both team-highs.

Carillo, a freshman keeper, needed to make zero saves in a 3-0 win over D’Youville on Monday, two saves in a 1-0 win over Geneseo on Friday, and five saves in a 1-0 win over Brockport on Saturday.

Carillo leads the SUNYAC in shutouts with four, and is third in both goals against average (0.47) and save percentage (.862).

Buffalo State will look to remain unbeaten in SUNYAC play next Saturday when it hosts Fredonia for a 1 p.m. “Battle by the Lake” contest.
