ALBANY — The New York State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for August, 2016, showing year-over-year improvements from August, 2015.

Over the last 12 months, the state’s private sector job count increased by 120,400 to 7,938,000. That figure, however, is down 13,000 jobs from July’s record 7,951,900.

Unemployment rates in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls and Rochester markets both showed improvement from August, 2015, as well. In the Buffalo-Niagara Falls market, unemployment stood at 4.7 percent a month ago, down from 5.2 percent a year ago. In Rochester, unemployment went down to 4.5 percent in August fro 4.8 percent a year ago.
