After a two-week break, the Niagara women’s soccer team is back in action this weekend. The Purple Eagles kick off conference play at Manhattan at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Niagara fell to Little 3 rival St. Bonaventure, 4-1, on Sept. 4. Ortiz, who led Niagara with five shots, all of which were on target, scored the lone goal for the Purple Eagles in the 28th minute. Hadley Bucken took a shot, which was deflected by the goalie back to Ortiz. Ortiz scored through traffic in front of the box to leave Niagara trailing by only one score, 2-1. Bucken’s assist was the first of her collegiate career. The Bonnies put the game out of reach when they notched two goals within the first 20 minutes of the second half, both occurring within eight minutes of each other.

The Purple Eagles and the Jaspers last met on Oct. 10, 2015 at Niagara University. Manhattan defeated Niagara, 1-0. Niagara was led by Naomi Giovino, who had a team-high three shots.

The Purple Eagles return to their home field on Sept. 24 when they host Quinnipiac at 1:00 p.m. Following Quinnipiac, Niagara takes on cross-town rival Canisius in the teams’ annual Battle of the Bridge meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 28. The match will be broadcast on ESPN3.
