LEXINGTON, Va. — Behind another strong outing from their defense, the University at Buffalo men’s soccer team (5-0-0, 0-0-0 MAC) collected their program record fifth straight cleansheet to open the season as they downed VMI 2-0 in on Friday afternoon. Senior captain Braden Scales netted both goals for the Bulls in the win, his first career two-goal match.

The Bulls broke through with the first goal of the match in the 22nd minute as freshman Rikard Lindqvist sent a great long ball to spring Braden Scales in free on the keeper. Scales calmly dribbled in and beat the keeper between the legs for his third of the season.

Buffalo nearly made the score 2-0 in the 26th minute as Russell Cicerone sent a nice cross into the box where Scott Doney’s shot was blocked away by the Keydets keeper. The Bulls finished off the first half with the 8-1 edge in shots over the Keydets.

UB wasted no time making it 2-0 in the second half as just 16 seconds into the half, Braden Scales buried his second of the match after a nice long pass from Russell Cicerone. Scales beat the keeper to the right corner as he was sent in all alone on Cicerone’s fifth assist of the season.

With two minutes remaining, the Keydets had their best chance to score but Jonathan Martinez saw his shot blocked away by the Buffalo defense and cleared out, sealing the 2-0 shutout win for UB.
Inside The Numbers

With the win, the Bulls improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2005 when they started the season 8-0.

Head coach Stu Riddle said, “To be successful at this level you need to be resilient defensively, have players step up at different times and grind through the conditions. We had all three ingredients today with another cleansheet, Braden Scales getting a brace and the whole team dealing with the stifling heat.”

The Bulls will stay on the road on Sunday as they will head to Liberty to take on the Flames at 1 p.m.
