TROY — Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Aaron Schauger of Grand Island has been named captain of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) golf team, head coach Miles Nolan has announced.

Schauger (Grand Island High School) is a fourth-year member of the team who has competed in 17 career matches and earned two All-Liberty League certificates.

An All-League Second Team honoree as a sophomore and Honorable Mention last year, he averaged 77.5 strokes over 16 rounds with his best round coming in his last, a 71 at the Liberty League Spring Tournament in 2015-16. He had three top 10 finishes, including a win in the conference event in late April. Schauger tied for fourth place overall in the Liberty League Champship, was seventh (tied) at the ECAC Tournament and eighth (tied) at the Duke Nelson Classic. He was the conference’s Performer of the Week once.

As a team, the Engineers posted seven top five finishes. They won the league’s spring event, finished third at the Duke Nelson, third at New York Universith and third at the Fred Kravetz Invitational. RPI was also third in the Liberty League’s four-round tournament, which was played with two rounds in the fall and two in the spring.

During his sophomore season, Schauger, a mechanical engineering major, competed in four events. He was eighth in the Kravetz Invitational, including a personal season best 74 (+3) on the second day. He also tied for 10th at the Liberty League Championship (80-77). As a freshman, he played in five events, including the Liberty League Fall Tournament in which he tied for ninth place.
