NORTH TONAWANDA — An elderly man was taken to DeGraff Hospital this afternoon after falling into the Upper Niagara River from his 12-foot aluminum boat.

According to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, the man fell into the water on the west side of Tonawanda Island after his boat took on water. The elderly man was assisted by family members who were nearby and jumped in the water until City of Tonawanda Police Marine unit arrived on scene to get him out of the water.

The man, whose identity is being withheld pending family notification, is listed in stable condition at DeGraff Hospital. The other occupant in the boat was taken out of the water by NCSO Maine Deputies and taken to shore, uninjured.
