Several weekly newspapers closed their doors at 5 p.m. as Community Papers of WNY has shuttered its business operations.

The parent company of Pennysavers in Arcade, Blasdell, Cheektowaga, Cuba/Franklinville, and Hamburg, in addition to the Gowanda News, Lockport Star, North Tonawanda Sun, Springville Journal and City of Tonawanda Sun reportedly told its employees via email today that today would be the last day of operations for the company, as well as the last day the employees would be paid for.

A post on the Springville Journal website states, “We were notified this afternoon that effective today, July 25, at 5 p.m. the Springville Journal will no longer be published.” Ironically, a front page story on the July 24 edition of the Lockport Star heralds the fact that the paper will not be turned into a Pennysaver.

CPOWNY, which also published three magazines, had filed for bankruptcy in December.
