ROCHESTER — Andrew Albers provided a stellar start, leading the Red Wings to a 6-1 win over the Syracuse Chiefs Thursday night at Frontier Field. The win, combined with first place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s loss, moves the Wings to within 3.5 games of the IL North Division’s top spot.

The homestand concludes at 7:05 p.m. with former Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams signing autographs and fireworks after the game.

The Wings jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first against Chiefs starter Austin Voth. Adam Brett Walker hit an RBI single that was mishandled by Chiefs left fielder Matt den Dekker, scoring James Beresford for a 1-0 advantage. Byung Ho Park extended the big inning with a three-run homer to left with Daniel Palka and Walker on base. It was Park’s third longball since being optioned to Rochester on July 1.

Albers retired 14 straight batters after Brian Goodwin’s single in the second at-bat of the game. He struck out three over that stretch.

Syracuse got its first run of the game in the sixth inning when Goodwin hit a double that split the outfielders in right-center, scoring Steve Lombardozzi from first to make the score 4-1.

Walker got the run right back, leading off the bottom half of the frame with a homer to left to make it 5-1. It was Walker’s 19th of the year and eighth to start an inning. John Ryan Murphy plated the sixth run with a single, scoring Tommy Field.

Voth exited the game after the Murphy RBI, replaced by Aaron Laffey. He allowed six runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings, registering two strikeouts and three walks. He threw 103 pitches, 62 for strikes.

Albers went into the ninth having allowed just five hits, and Albers allowed a single to open the top of the ninth. A lineout and strikeout put the Chiefs down to their final out, and Pedro Severino lined out to Jorge Polanco for the final out. Albers scattered six hits, allowing one earned run with no walks and five strikeouts. Albers threw 109 pitches, 76 for strikes in pitching his second complete game of the season for the Red Wings.
