BUFFALO — The Raid on Black Rock occurred 203 years ago today when the British crossed the Niagara River, taking on 200 Americans and 30 Seneca warriors.

Americans, with help from the Senecas, repelled the 240 Brits. There were three American deaths and six serious injuries. The British suffered three deaths, as well, but were more seriously affected by the 24 wounded, and 13 prisoners taken.

On Dec. 30, 1813, the British returned, laying siege to Buffalo, burning and plundering much of the Black Rock area.

The sign at right can be found at the corner of Niagara and Connecticut streets, near the Connecticut Street Armory.
