SARDINIA — A survey worker was struck and killed Wednesday in a crash on Route 39.

According to Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard, the crash occurred around 4 p.m. where an eastbound vehicle crossed over lanes and struck the survey worker in the westbound lane in between Savage Road and Mill Street.

After striking Samuel Pagano, 22 of South Wales, the truck continued forward striking a tree and then a utility pole causing it to fall.

Members of the Sardinia and Yorkshire fire companies responded to the scene and provided first aid. The driver of the vehicle sustained a leg injury and was transported to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital. Members of the fire companies provided aid to the victim but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the crash. No charges have yet been filed.
