LEWISTON — A small fire shuttered two of the 13 units making electricity at the Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Station and forced the evacuation of part of the plant.

According to the New York Power Authority, which operates the plant, smoke was reported shortly after 1 p.m. at Unit 2 of the plant. A short while later, black smoke and some flames were found coming from the unit, which was immediately shut down.

Social media had originally indicated that there was an explosion at the plant, but NYPA indicates that evidence does not support that claim.

Fire companies from Lewiston and the Town of Niagara were called to the scene and the fire was quickly extinguished, although it continued to smolder until approximately 3:30 p.m. Niagara County Emergency Management was called to the scene to investigate.

There were no reported injuries and the 11 units remaining in operation are enough to handle the plants needs at the time being, according to NYPA.
