LOCKPORT — The American Red Cross will hold a community blood drive from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Cornerstone Arena.

The drive is being held to boost blood bank levels during the summer, when less blood tends to be donated. With many holidays falling during the summer season and many people away on vacation, this time of year is challenging for the Red Cross. The need for blood in New York State and the entire country is significant.

Anyone who is healthy and 17 years of age or older is urged to donate. Donors must also weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. All blood types are needed. Accident victims, premature babies, people undergoing cancer treatment, organ recipients, and many others rely on the generosity of blood donors.

Walk-ins are welcome, but to schedule a time to donate, call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit www.redcrossblood.org. Photo ID is required.

Donors will receive a free Red Cross lunch tote and pizza.

Community partners for the blood drive include Lockport Mayor Anne McCaffrey, Police Chief Mike Niethe, and State Sen. Rob Ortt.
