OLCOTT — A 50-year-old Pennsylvania man is in fair condition tonight following an explosion aboard a boat in the Newfane Marina this morning.

According to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, J.F. Carbaugh of Chambersburg, Pa, was injured by a fuel vapor explosion around 9:34 a.m.

NCSO Deputies and members of the Olcott and Miller Hose Volunteer Fire Companies responded to the scene and confirmed that Carbaugh was injured in an apparent explosion aboard the watercraft. He was attended to at the scene after which he was transported by Mercy Flight to the Erie County Medical Center for treatment of a head injury.

Preliminary investigation conducted by Deputies of the NCSO Marine Patrol Unit revealed that Carbaugh was a passenger aboard the 23-foot Bayliner when the explosion occurred. The explosion originated in the inboard engine compartment and is believed to have been caused by insufficiently vented fuel vapors.

Carbaugh remains at ECMC, where he is listed as being in fair condition.
