ALABAMA — A 26-year-old Basom man was charged Tuesday with criminal possession of a controlled substance and traffic violations following a rollover crash on Allegheny Road.

According to New York State Police, Brandon W. Benben lost control of his 2008 Pontiac Grand Am while he was looking down while operating his cellphone, exiting the west shoulder of the roadway, striking a mailbox at the end of a driveway culvert, and flipping over onto the roof, coming to rest in the southbound lane of Allegheny Road. Benben sustained a minor non-life threatening injury that required no EMS.

While looking inside the vehicle, Troopers observed a hypodermic needle in plain view. Investigation revealed multiple open/empty heroin packets, hypodermic needles, three Diazepam pills and a bundle of 10 unopened packets of suspected heroin in individual plastic baggies.

Benben was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Alabama Court on Tuesday. He was also issued uniform traffic tickets for operating a motor vehicle while using a mobile telephone, failing to use designated lane and driving across hazard markings. returnable on July 12.
