LAS VEGAS — Buffalo-born Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player at the 2016 NHL Awards on Wednesday.

Kane led the NHL in the 2015-2016 season with 106 points, earning him the Art Ross Trophy, as well, awarded to the league’s scoring leader. He is the first American-born player to win either award. Kane also won the Ted Lindsay Award, given to the most valuable player as voted by players.

While Los Angeles Kings center Anze Kopitar won the Lady Byng Trophy — for sportsmanship — a pair of Sabres were listed in the finalists. Ryan O’Reilly placed fifth and Sam Reinhart placed 16th.

The Calder Trophy — for top rookie scorer — went to Chicago Blackhawks forward Artemi Panarin. Buffalo’s Jack Eichel placed fourth in the category. Reinhart placed ninth.

Eichel was also named to the the 2015-16 NHL All-Rookie Team along with Panarin, Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid, Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, St. Louis Blues defenseman Colton Parayko and Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson.

The awards ceremony was held in Las Vegas, which will be home to the NHL’s newest team beginning in the 2017-2018 season. A name for the team has not yet been selected.

The league will now shift its focus to Buffalo, where the NHL 2016 Draft will be held Friday and Saturday at the First Niagara Center.
