BUFFALO — The suspicious package found at Canalside Friday morning that caused the closure of the area and brought out the Erie County Bomb Squad is now in the possession of the Buffalo Police Department.

BPD said late Friday night that they were reviewing evidence to see who placed the non-explosive package inside the porta-potty and when.

The item was originally found around 9:30 a.m. by a worker at Canalside. It was believed at the time that it may be explosive, leading BPD to close the area off and call in the bomb squad. The Erie County Bomb Squad pulled the package out of the portable toilet with the use of a robot and bagged it, but determined that it was “not explosive in nature.”

Canalside was re-opened to pedestrians and the surrounding streets were re-opened to traffic around 2 p.m. Friday.
