TOWN OF LOCKPORT — Five people have been charged with attempting to smuggle marijuana and Suboxone into the Niagara County Jail.

According to Niagara County Sheriff Jim Voutour, two people were charged around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of the jail. They were 48-year-old Denise Bern of the Town of Lockport and 52-year-old Kenneth Wondolowski of the City of Lockport. NCSO says they had attempted to attach contraband to a string that was crafted from the seam of mattresses that were knotted together and had been lowered out of the second story window of the jail. Unfortunately for them, it was seen by people in the jail lobby. Their charges include first-degree promoting prison contraband, fifth-degree conspiracy, and criminal possession of a controlled substance. Bail was set on the pair at $5,000 cash or $10,00 bond.

Further investigation resulted in the arrest of the following three inmates for their role in the attempt: 46-year-old Joseph Gugliuzza of the City of Lockport, 34-year-old Jason Benedict of the City of Lockport, and 39-year-old Barry Frain, Jr. of North Tonawanda. They were charged Thursday with second-degree attempted promotion of a prison contraband and fifth-degree conspiracy. Bail on the three was also set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.
