Gasoline prices in Buffalo and Rochester were up slightly over the past week, according to AAA of Western and Central New York.

The average price for a gallon of unleaded gas in the Buffalo area is $2.14, up a penny from a week ago, while Rochester’s gas price of $2.13 is up two cent. Today’s New York State average is $2.18, up a penny from last week.

The national average price for a gallon of unleaded gas dropped 2 cents from last week to $2.04 per gallon. One year ago, the national average was $2.39.

The switchover to summer-blend gasoline at refineries has already taken place, and this special blend of fuel has begun to make its way to fuel terminals in many parts of the country, though it can take a few weeks because fuel travels through pipelines at four miles per hour. This blend costs more to produce, and drivers likely will notice higher prices in areas required to use this fuel, such as in the Northeast, over the next few weeks.

In addition, continued refinery maintenance and rising demand may also lead to higher prices in some areas. Although prices are expected to move higher leading into the summer driving season, consumers will likely continue to benefit from comparative savings due to the overall abundance of supply and the lower price for crude oil.
