The Toledo Mud Hens blanked the Red Wings, 2-0, Saturday night at Fifth Third Field.
Mud Hens starter Tyler Alexander, who entered the day with a 1-8 mark and a 6.50 ERA, turned in his best outing of the season striking out a career high 12 over seven scoreless innings. The southpaw allowed just two hits and two walks over his 107-pitch performance.
Alexander out dueled Devin Smeltzer (0-2) who struck out eight over 4.2 innings. The Wings lefty allowed a two-out RBI double to Mike Cameron’s son, Daz, in the second inning and uncorked a wild pitch in the third to account for the only two runs of the game for Toledo.
Zander Wiel, Wynston Sawyer and Brent Rooker picked up the only hits of the night for Rochester (34-38).
The hit for Rooker extended his hit streak to 10 games.
The bullpen combo of Cody Stashak, Gabriel Moya and Ian Krol tossed 3.1 scoreless innings of relief to keep the Wings within striking distance.
Meanwhile, a former Wings reliever, Caleb Thielbar tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball for Toledo.
The Wings will need a win in the series finale Sunday evening (4:05 pm) to split the four-game set and avoid losing both series on this Ohio road trip.
