Mary Karen McWhorter Butler of Lewiston, NY, passed away Thursday, November 3, 2016 in Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital, Lewiston, NY with family at her side. She was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on July 30, 1950, the daughter of the late Frank H. and Teresa [Asma] McWhorter.

Mrs. McWhorter Butler graduated from Niagara Falls High School, Marymount College and received her Masters Degree from Fordham University. She was a special education teacher in the Edgemont School District in Edgemont, NY, for over 20 years, before retiring. Mrs. McWhorter Butler moved back to Lewiston in 2009. She loved music, the arts, and her cats.

She is survived by her son Aaron McWhorter Butler, daughter-in-law Christie Bertels, and granddaughter Emaline Mae Butler, and her dear companion Douglas Levey.

Her family will be present on Monday from 9:30 – 10:30 AM at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 901 Cayuga Street, LEWISTON, NY, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at St. Peter’s Church, 620 Center St., Lewiston, NY, with Msgr. David G. LiPuma officiating.

Memorials may be made in her name to Niagara County SPCA, American Lung Association, Lewiston Council on the Arts, or Edgemont School Foundation.

She will be interred at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY beside her parents and grandparents.
