BUFFALO — Canisius women’s basketball continues its season at 1 p.m. Saturday, as the squad plays Lamar in a post-Thanksgiving showdown. The Cardinals come to town after the Griffs played in Beaumont, Texas, last season.

Canisius enters the contest with a 1-3 record, coming off a 95-74 loss to St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday. Canisius had a strong first half against a Red Flash offense that is averaging over 90 points per game, keeping pace and taking a 43-43 score to halftime. However St. Francis outscored the Blue and Gold in the second half 52-31 to race out to the 95-74 victory.

Two stories played out through the game,  as the performances of Lauren D’Hont and Sara Hinriksdottir opened eyes, however so too did the absence of several key players, most notably Maria Welch. Both D’Hont and Hinriksdottir set career-highs for the Griffs in the contest, as D’Hont poured in 24 points, while Hinriksdottir notched 20 in the contest. While the duos performances was hard to miss against the Red Flash, so too was the absence of one of the Griffs, most high profile players, in Welch. Welch came into the contest averaging 12 points and 4.3 rebounds however was held out of the contest. Coming into the weekend the Blue and Gold are averaging 67.8 points, but are allowing 77.0 points from opponents. The Griffs are shooting 40.3 from the field, while foes are slightly more accurate draining 41.4 percent of its shots. The Blue and Gold is working the ball into the paint more this year, relying less on the long-range jumper. Canisius is averaging 30 points in the paint this year, and is coming off a game where it put up 40 against St. Francis (Pa.). Canisius has done a much better job of protecting the basketball, averaging just 12 turnovers per game and hold a +3.8 turnover margin.
