BUFFALO — The Griffs wrap up its first foray into MAAC action on Sunday, as the squad hosts Monmouth for a 2 p.m. showdown at the Koessler Athletic Center. It will be Canisius’ final MAAC contest until late December.
The Blue and Gold enter the Sunday matchup on a four-game losing skid, dropping a heartbreaking, 71-70 decision to Rider on Friday. Canisius cut the Broncs lead to just one with 19 seconds left on the clock, but after gaining possession with a chance to take the lead, the Griffs were called for a travel, and it sealed the Blue and Gold’s fate. Saliah Serrette’s herculean effort was spoiled by the loss, as the junior set a new-career best with 23 points, as she shot 8-of-10 from the field and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Against Rider, Canisius seemingly shored up its rebounding woes, out-rebounding Rider, 31-24, however the Griffs turned it over 22 times during the contest, leading to the loss. The Griffs come into Sunday with a 1-5 record and an 0-1 conference mark. Sophomore, jack-of-all-trades, Sara Hinriksdottir leads the team in points, averaging 13.8 so far this season. She is also second on the team in rebounds per game with a 5.3 mark, and paces the team with 21 assists. Lauren D’Hont has also been a source of offense for Canisius, as she sits just behind Hinriksdottir with 13.2 points per game. Sophomore Maria Welch also averages double-digits for the Canisius offense, posting 10.8 points per game and also leads the team in rebounding average with a 5.4 board-per-game mark. The team comes into the weekend averaging 65.3 points per game, while opponents have gotten the best of the Canisius defense, averaging 74 points per game against the Blue and Gold.
