NIAGARA UNIV. — Niagara rallied in the final minutes of regulation to force overtime before falling in the extra period, 93-87, to the Marist Red Foxes on Monday night.
Matt Scott’s putback layup as time expired sent the game into overtime to cap off a furious rally, in a half which saw Niagara trailed as much as 14 points. Niagara faced a 76-67 deficit with 2:40 remaining in the second half. A Marvin Prochet 3-pointer started a 9-1 run in a span of 54 seconds. After Marist increased its lead to 81-76 with 30 seconds left, Kahlil Dukes trimmed the lead to 81-79 on a 3-pointer with 21 seconds on the clock.
Marist missed the frontend of a one-and-one free throw on the en suing possession to leave the door open for the Purple Eagles. Dominic Robb missed a layup with three seconds on the clock, but Scott was there for the rebound and layup to force overtime with the scored knotted at 81-81.
However, the Purple Eagles never led in the overtime period. The Red Foxes went on a 5-0 run to start overtime. A pair of free throws by James Towns cut the lead to 86-83 with 2:19 remaining, but NU was unable to generate much offense in the period as the Red Foxes pulled away for the win.
