BUFFALO – Junior David Parrottino and freshman Nick Hutchison tallied two goals each to spark Canisius to a 6-1 victory over RIT in Atlantic Hockey Conference action Saturday at KeyBank Rink in HARBORCENTER.
Juniors Mike Sabatini and Ryan Schmelzer also scored for the Griffs (10-10-5, 9-4-4 AHC) while sophomore Felix Chamberland dished out three assist to give Canisius a sweep of the home-and-home series with the Tigers (10-14-1, 10-9-0 AHC).
Sabatini opened the scoring at the 17:43 mark of the first period when he stuffed home a goalmouth feed from senior Geoff Fortman in the dying seconds of a Canisius power play to give the Griffs a 1-0 lead.
Canisius struck twice in the opening 2:20 of the second to expand its margin to 3-0. Schmelzer beat RIT keeper Christian Short from close range less than a minute into the middle frame for the Griffs second power play goal of the contest before Hutchison jammed home a rebound 1:40 later for his first of the evening.
Myles Powell got the Tigers on the board midway through the second as he capped an end-to-end rush by sliding the puck between the legs of Canisius senior goaltender Charles Williams and into the cage to make it a 3-1 contest.
Parrottino restored Canisius’ three-goal margin with less than two minutes remaining in the second period when he beat Short with a wrist shot from the slot on a feed from sophomore Dylan McLaughlin.
Hutchison and Parrottino both notched their second goals of the contest during the third period to close out the scoring. Hutchison wired a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle past Short at the 8:51 mark while Parrottino tallied Canisius’ third man-advantage marker of the game with 12:47 elapsed in the frame.
Williams recorded 20 saves in goal for Canisius. Short turned aside 19 shots between the pipes for the Tigers.
Canisius renews acquaintances with longtime rival Niagara when the two teams met Tuesday in a 7:35 p.m. contest at KeyBank Rink in HARBORCENTER. The matchup, part of the Battle of the Bridge rivalry, is the first of four meetings between the Griffs and Purple Eagles over the final five weeks of the regular season.
