The trio of (junior) Erica Evans, (junior) Jen Reininger and (sophomore) Jourdan Roemer led the Canisius women’s lacrosse team with two goals each, as the team lost its season opening game at No. 9 Northwestern 9-7 Monday afternoon.
The Blue and Gold held the lead over the Wildcats on three separate occasions, including a 5-4 lead early on in the second half.
The Griffs opened the scoring with a goal from Roemer at 22:08 of the first to tie the game at 1-1, and would then take a 2-1 lead at 18:07 on Reininger’s first goal in a Blue and Gold uniform. After a goal from the Wildcats to tie the contest at 15:13, the Golden Griffins would again take the lead with a goal from sophomore Tessa Chad assisted by Reininger.
Northwestern would then add two straight goals down the stretch to reclaim the lead, before Roemer added her second goal of the game to even the score 4-4 at the half.
The Griffs started off the second strong with a goal by Evans at 26:55 to reclaim the lead for the Griffs at 5-4. From there, the Wildcats would take control of the game with three straight goals to give Northwestern a 7-5 lead. The Griffs and Wildcats would trade two goals each to close the contest, with both Evans and Reininger adding their second goals of the game.
Junior Rebecca VanLaeken ended the game with 16 saves, while giving up the nine goals.
