BUFFALO — Down 1-0 with less than six minutes remaining in regulation, Cody Franson scored his third goal of the season for the Buffalo Sabres, sending their game with the New York Rangers into overtime.

The goal gave the Sabres momentum, which they carried into the overtime period. That momentum died with a penalty against the home team. Although the Sabres killed that penalty off, Chris Kreider scored for New York seconds later, for the 2-1 Rangers’ victory.

The loss was the first of 2017 at KeyBank Center. They have a chance to get back into the win column on Saturday when they host the Ottawa Senators at 7 p.m.
