The Canisius women’s lacrosse will look for its first win of the 2017 season when team travels to Eugene, Ore. Monday afternoon to face the Oregon Ducks at 4 p.m. EST.
The Griffs are 0-1 to begin the year, after a 9-7 loss at No. 9 Northwestern on Jan. 30. In the team’s first game of 2017, MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Erica Evans, junior Jen Reininger, and sophomore Jourdan Roemer each scored two goals.
The Blue and Gold held a lead on several occasions, including a 5-4 second half advantage, before ultimately falling to one of the nation’s best.
A season ago the Griffs went 5-5 on the road, with two of those losses coming against ranked opponents, No. 18 Ohio State and No. 13 Cornell in the team’s first round loss of the NCAA Tournament.
Monday’s game marks the first time the two teams will face off against one another. The Griffs are 2-6 all-time against teams from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, defeating St. Mary’s 14-12 in 2007 and Fresno State 20-1 in 2009.
Oregon is 2-0 to begin the 2017 season, with wins over Michigan, 11-8, and San Diego State, 11-9. The Ducks are led offensively by sophomore Shannon Williams, who has a team-high six goals and eight points. Senior goalkeeper Becca Katzen has started in both contests for the Ducks, holding an 8.50 GAA and a .485 save percentage to begin the year.
