NIAGARA UNIV. — The Purple Eagles women’s basketball team fell to Siena, 70-68, in the final seconds of the game on Thursday.

The Purple Eagles set the pace in the first quarter, leading the Saints for the entirety of the quarter. Stroemple led the drive early with four points and three assists and Morgan Baughman had six points. Niagara led Siena, 15-11, going into the second quarter. Niagara continued to hold its ground in the second quarter, as Rampado had six of her 11 first-half points. The Purple Eagles led the Saints, 27-24, going into halftime. The Purple Eagles went on a 7-0 run to start the third quarter, capped by a layup from Rampado to give Niagara a ten-point lead, 34-24. The Saints, however, made a comeback, going on a run of their own and led 50-46 heading into the final quarter of play. Trailing for much of the fourth quarter, the Purple Eagles made a late push. Down by only three, Stroemple hit Jamie Sherburne for a 3-pointer that bounced in and tied the score, 68-68, with 4.4 seconds remaining. After a Siena timeout, Jackie Benitez drove right to the hoop and hit a shot off the glass to win the game for the Saints, 70-68.

The Purple Eagles host Saint Peter’s for their final home game of the season on Saturday at 3 p.m. Niagara will honor its graduating seniors prior to tip-off.
