The Canisius baseball team won both games of its Saturday double-header in Lake Point, Ga., as the squad bested Chicago State 8-1 in the first game, and NJIT, 6-1 in game No. 2. Canisius improved to 3-0 on the weekend, and 5-2 so far in the 2017 campaign.
GAME 1 RECAP
Against Chiago State the Griffs used a three-run rally in the top of the fifith to help stake claim to a lead it never relinquished as, Cyrus Senior did the greatest damage with a two-RBI triple, to put Canisius up 3-0.
The Blue and Gold added four in the top of the ninth, with the score 4-1, to put the game away. Brandon Nicholson dealth the big blow of the inning, belting a single, and socring John Conti and Ryan Stekl, for two of the team’s four runs in the inning.
Liam Wilson set the table for the Griffs at the top of the order and rapped out four hits in five at bats with one RBI. Jake Lumley also had a strong day with three hits in four at bats and an RBI.
Andrew Sipowicz got the start and worked 4.1 innings and allowed just one hit and four baserunners, in the no decision. Michael Ginther came on in relief and went 2.2 innings, yielded four hits and one run as he earned the victory. Jared Kennedy and Kyle Warner both pitched an inning of relief and allowed no hits and no runs.
Justin Wyant got the start for Chicago State and worked 4.1 innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs to take the loss.
Jacob Vanitvelt and Cody Freund both led the way for CSU, recording a pair of this each.
GAME TWO RECAP
In the second game of the day, Canisius used a three-run sixth inning to record the victory over NJIT.
Senior and Joseph Preziuso scored on a error, while Ryan Stekl singled up the middle and brought in Wilson to cap the big inning.
Junior J.P. Stevenson turned in his second-straight solid start, as he worked 6.1 innings, allowed six hits and one run, and fanned six batters to improve to 2-0. Brennan Smith came on in relief and worked 2.2 innings, and allowed just one hit and two strikeouts as he recorded his first save as a Griff.
Ryan Stekl did the most damage in game No. 2, as the junior recorded three hits on four at bats and notched a pair of RBI in the contest.
Canisius now gears up for one final matchup in Lake Point Ga., as the Griffs take on IPFW one final time at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Canisius then prepares for a four-game set with Fordham next weekend.
