The 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Champion Canisius women’s lacrosse team will face No. 12 Boston College on Friday, May 12, in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship. Boston College (13-6) advanced to the ACC semifinal round for the first since 2013 last weekend before losing to No. 3 North Carolina, 17-14. Syracuse University will serve as a host venue for the regional round. Canisius’ game time and venue will be announce Monday.
Canisius claimed its sixth MAAC title in the last seven season Sunday, defeating Fairfield University in the 2017 MAAC Championship 13-10. Canisius (15-4) enters the NCAA Tournament having won 12 straight contests dating back to March 8. The Blue and Gold are led by Tewaaraton Award semifinalist junior Erica Evans, who had a season high 10 points in the the championship game (6g, 4a), while being named the MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship’s Most Valuable Player for a second consecutive season. Evans became the first player in Canisius and MAAC history to reach 100 points in a single-season in Sunday’s win and currently sits at 107 total points. With her six goals this afternoon, Evans also passed USC’s Michaela Michael for the most goals in the NCAA this year at 76.
Boston College has been exceptional on their home turf this season, holding a 7-1 record at home, while having a 5-4 record when playing away from Chestnut Hill. The Eagles have five wins against ranked teams this season (No. 15 Massachusetts, No. 15 Louisville, No. 17 Virginia and No. 11, No. 13 Notre Dame) and came within two goals of beating defending national champion North Carolina (15-13) on March 25.
The winner of Friday’s game between the Griffs and Eagles will play Syracuse in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday.
