Team Canada cut the United States’ lead to 8-4 late in the second half but eventually fell in the gold-medal contest of the 2017 Rathbones World Cup in London, 10-5, in England on Saturday. With the loss head coach Scott Teeter and the rest of the Canisius contingent consisting of Erica Evans, Kaylin Morissette and Tessa Chad completed the tournament with a silver medal.
“I’m extremely proud of my girls,” Teeter said. “They played an incredible game.”
The United States took a 5-1 lead into halftime, with the lone Canadian goal coming from its veteran leader, Dana Dobbie. Out of the halftime break the United States reeled off three-straight goals to push the lead to 8-2.
Canada struck in the 45th minute as Erica Evans broke through and Alie Jimerson added a pair to make it 8-4 in the 51st minute.
The United States broke up the abbreviated run, scoring a pair to make it 10-4 with less than five minutes remaining in the game, before Evans notched her second of the game and 19th of the tournament, to cap the scoring, as Canada lost 10-5.
Evans finishes as Team Canada’s leading scorer with 19 goals and one assist. Morissette was 5-of-10 on draws and tallied a pair of draw controls on Saturday.
“Although it was 10-5, we were in the game,” said Teeter. “If we get a couple of bounces our way and score on those five shots that hit the post, the result could have been different. We kept it close, but we would’ve needed to play a cleaner game to get the win.”
“To have it within striking distance against the U.S., a team full of collegiate All-Americans, shows that our national team program is on the right path. The most exciting thing is that we get to keep this team together.
Team Canada continues its international play on July 27 when the squad begins competition at the World Games held in Poland. Teeter’s squad takes on Australia on July 27, before competing with Japan on July 28.
