UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS



WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The University at Buffalo outdoor track and field team had a good opener at the William & Mary Quad on Saturday in Williamsburg, VA. The meet was highlighted by Caleb Covell breaking the school record in the men’s 3,000m with a time of 8:21.35 to place second.
Other highlights on the men’s side include:
• Mitchell Moore won the 400m hurdles in 53.41 – a MAC Auto Qualifying Time.
• In the short sprints, Ray Anikwue had a strong day placing 2nd in the 200m in a personal best time of 22.38.
• UB’s middle distance men had strong showing, with Leon Atkins placing 3rd in the 800m with a personal best time of 1:52.64, and in the 1500m, freshman Christopher Nowak led for the Bulls, placing 5th in a personal best time of 3:55.28.
• The Bulls also had a 3-4 finish in the 3k steeple chase with John McCarthy and Matt Mercer.
• In the field events, the throws were the dominating force.  Devon Patterson and Ryan Cribbin went 1-2 in the shot put, both with MAC Auto Qualifying Marks (58’4.75″ and 57’5.5″, respectively).
• Sam Wray took 2nd in the discus in 166’9″. 
On the women’s side, to no surprise, Selina Von Jackowski was again a headliner.  Von Jackowski won the 100 high hurdles in a MAC Auto Qualifying Mark of 14.02, and the long jump.
Other highlights on the women’s side included:
• Nikari Carota placed 2nd in the 100 high hurdles.
• Jhada Francis scored for the Bulls in both the 100m and 200m.
• Amy Villarini had a strong opening performance in the 400m in 57.22.
• Morgan Mahoney placed 4th in the 1500m, while Charlotte Molloy turned in a personal best mark in the 3000m of 10:09.57, placing 4th overall.
• In the field events, the UB women again showed dominance in the throws.  Joanna Hallisy won the shot put in 44’11”
• Miranda Daucher opened with a 1st place finish in the Discus, with a MAC Auto qualifying mark of 170’8″, and she also placed 2nd in the hammer throw with a distance of 168’0″.
• Sophomore Samantha Hjelmar placed 2nd in the high jump in 5’3″.  
“It was a solid first meet of the outdoor season,” head coach Vicki Mitchell said. “We put in a great week of training, taking advantage of being on the outdoor track each day.  This was a meet for our student-athletes to grind through after a really strong week of training.” 
The Bulls are back in action next weekend. A few members of the squad will travel to the Sunshine State to compete in the Florida Relays. The rest of the team will compete at Geneseo.
