ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Syracuse Chiefs topped the Rochester Red Wings 7-1 Wednesday afternoon at Frontier Field, sweeping the three-game series. The Wings return home to host Columbus and Gwinnett beginning Friday, April 20 at 6:35 p.m.
Syracuse wasted no time as the first five batters recorded hits off Red Wings starter Dietrich Enns. Nick Marmolejos and Alejandro De Aza had RBI hits to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead, then Enns settled down and retired the next three batters on flyouts.
In the bottom half of the first, Jake Cave hit the Wings’ first home run of the season off Chiefs starter Austin Voth to cut the Chiefs’ lead to 2-1.
Syracuse regained their two run lead in the top half of the third inning after an Irving Falu RBI double, making the score 3-1.
In the top of the fourth, Syracuse extended their lead to three runs when Cave attempted a diving catch on a ball hit by Chris Dominguez. The play was scored a double and the Chiefs led 4-1. DJ Baxendale relieved Enns, with Enns allowing four earned runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings Enns issued two walks while picking up a pair of strikeouts and Enns threw 77 pitches, 55 for strikes.
Former Red Wing Bengie Gonzalez chipped in a sacrifice fly and two-run homer to finish the scoring for the Chiefs. .
Voth tossed 5.2 innings allowing one run on three hits, issuing one walk while striking out nine. Voth threw 92 pitches, 63 for strikes.
In the top of the seventh, Mason Melotakis came in to relieve Baxendale. Melotakis allowed the home run to Gonzalez, and fanned four in two innings of work. Jake Reed pitched the ninth inning for the Red Wings, allowing two hits and striking out one.
The Chiefs out-hit the Wings 14-4.

NOTES: RHP Myles Jaye will start the road series in Gwinnett Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.; Jaye will be the final member of the Wings’ starting rotation to appear. Relievers John Curtiss and Matt Magill are the only remaining relievers yet to appear this season.
