CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Canisius head coach Mark Miyashita is set to make his international coaching debut this week as he and the Canadian senior men’s national team take part in the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Men’s World Championship in Netanya, Israel.
Miyashita, who will serve as an assistant coach, is part of a Canadian coaching and support staff that is full of Canisius connections. Golden Griffin Hall of Famer and former Canisius head coach Randy Mearns is back to serve as head coach of the senior national team after leading the team to the gold medal during the 2014 FIL World Championship held in Denver, Colo.
Former Canisius letterwinner and assistant coach Jason Levesque is also part of the coaching staff, serving as an assistant coach, while former Griff Jeff Polisoto is part of the team’s support staff.
Former Canisius midfielder and assistant coach Brendan Murphy will also be taking part in the 46-team event as a member of team Belgium.
Canada will be in the ‘Blue Division’ for pool play, which takes four of the six spots in the Championship Bracket after pool play concludes.
Miyashita is looking to add his second championship this year after guiding Canisius to the program’s third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title in May. The former Griffs standout and Canisius athletics Hall of Famer is set to begin his second season as head coach after taking over for Mearns last August.
