PRESS RELEASE

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Attorney General Barbara Underwood has released the following statement regarding the proposed Borrower Defense Rule:
“With today’s proposed rule, the Trump-DeVos Department of Education is seeking to give unscrupulous for-profit schools free rein to exploit hardworking students. The Borrower Defense Rule was intended to provide critical protections for students who are simply trying to invest in their own education and future – yet the new proposed rule would leave many borrowers high and dry while exacerbating the student loan crisis. This office will do what’s necessary to protect New York’s students, including by forcefully opposing this proposed rule.”
Last year, the New York Attorney General’s office sued the U.S. Department of Education for unlawfully delaying the implementation of the Borrower Defense Rule.
