Hello Metalheads! This is John back with another album review! This time I bring to you Shed the Sleep by Coma Control which released on August 14, 2026. So let me address one thing right up front, I have been procrastinating on this write up for quite a while. I really enjoy this release and have had the hardest time getting my thoughts together on this sophomore release.
Coma Control is a one person band(Tapio Honka) that releases some seriously chaotic prog metal. The amount of times they shift the genre, groove or just overall vibe around very quickly intrigues the hell out of me. The coolest part about that is the composition style as it is almost stream of consciousness. By this I mean no form whatsoever and passages strung together with no rhyme or reason, but it works so well! The other element that draws me right into both Coma Control albums is the odd time signatures and harmonies that are dissonant. The amount of times I found myself counting groupings to track time signatures and figuring out harmonies was wild on Shed the Sleep!
My favorite track on this latest album is Inherently Unmet! This is the “real” start of the album for me, but it is the third track. The first two tracks are kind of a warm up to the more chaotic nature of this album. My favorite stretch of this track is as follows: a trashy fast head banging part, quick transition to a depressive almost funeral-esque(even down to the organ led chords) atmospheric passage, a surfing upbeat groove then finally a melodic and almost technical death metal passage to end the track. If that doesn’t make you ask “what in the hell is going in here?” then I don’t know what would! I love every second of this and it makes me smile just thinking about how silly that is.
So overall I would give Shed the Sleep a 9/10 and hope Tapio has some more Coma Control material in the works. I’m very impressed with the first two album and can’t wait to hear what cooky stuff the have next. As always if you like this music stream it, follow the projects page and even buy their music!
