Connecticut’s death metal group Marvel of Decay dropped their shark inspired EP “Display of Indifference” last November. My band Morgue Terror played with them last April at Connecticut death fest with bands such as Malignancy, Frog Mallet, Coronary Thrombosis, Scumbag, Xenosis and more. That said I’ve developed a likening to this band after catching them there. And they’re cool dudes to boot. So I was curious to check out their new release and loved it last year. After multitasking a few things, I’m here to tell you about it.

Being a Jaws fan as a kid and into my adulthood, I’m loving the theme. Being my favorite animal I love the pure brutality and beauty of the animal. The cover depicts it all, a big shark with big teeth tearing its prey apart to billions of pieces. I love the band because of their no BS and gimmick attitude, straight to the point death metal style. It has riffs, lots of groove (with occasional technicality for flavor) and bludgeoning vocals. The vocals are inconsistent range wise, which is good for me. I prefer lower vocals but if there’s higher pitched growls I prefer a mix usually. And the vocal mix is great. It’s a four track effort and doesn’t overstay its welcome.

The band is flat out heavy, massively talented (for a CT based band that doesn’t play out of their area often) band and also a fun live show. They definitely appeal to fans of death metal, maybe of all ages. Marvel of Decay gets slammy at times but isn’t a slam band. They have the same characteristics of any death metal band, but don’t lean too heavy into a sub genre (brutal death, slam, tech). And honestly I think that works to their advantage. And every song perfectly represents that.

I’m sure this band will be new to a lot for people and that’s a goal for my website. Expose newer or less popular bands to a hopeful wider audience. They have a few EP’S and a full length under their belt, and to me that’s a busy body of work. They started in 2019 and their first release was 2020’s appropriately titled “Quarantine”. 2021 they dropped an EP “Abysmal Grip” and the full length “Virulent Realms” in 2023. Then, this EP late November of 2025. 3 EP’S and a full length in 5 (going on 6) years for a regional band is impressive, to me at least. For a band that does this for fun (according to their guitarist Spencer), they’re pretty solid. Give this a listen at the links below and support the band!
