A new month starts with a new low for gas prices. The national average dipped to $3 for a gallon of regular gasoline for the first time since May 12, 2021. The seven cent drop in price from one week ago comes as AAA estimates over 73 million Americans drove 50 miles or more from their home during the Thanksgiving holiday – a record number for road trippers since AAA began tracking holiday travel.
Despite the short-term burst of drivers, overall seasonal demand for gas is sluggish. Motorists are benefitting from low demand, the cheaper to produce winter blend of fuel, and consistently low oil prices when they pay at the pump. This morning oil is trading in the $59-$63 range per barrel. In the absence of an unexpected disruption in production or transportation, consumers will likely see gas prices continue to fall in the coming weeks.
This past week also saw a halt in the recent rise in diesel prices. The national average is $3.74 – down five cents from last week. The New York average is $3.94, no change from a week ago.
When it comes to EV charging, the national and state averages for L2 commercial electricity remain steady. Today’s national average per kilowatt hour of electricity at a public EV charging station is 38 cents. New York’s rate is 37 cents. An estimated 1.2 million AAA members live in households with one or more electric vehicles.
To conserve fuel, motorists should map routes, avoid peak traffic times like rush hour, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control when possible. Drivers should also make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage while removing any unnecessary and bulky items from the car since it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle.
