BUFFALO – Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon, in partnership with the City of Buffalo Division of Parks and Recreation and the Police Athletic League of Buffalo, is calling on interested residents of all ages to register now for the November 2025 Lifeguard Certification and Training Program in the City of Buffalo. The dates of the next training course are as follows: Saturday, November 1st, Sunday, November 2nd, Saturday, November 15th and Sunday, November 16th, with a makeup date of Saturday, November 22nd. All classes will take place at the Connors, Kait, Harrity Memorial Pool/Cazenovia Pool, located at 626 Abbott Road, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Lifeguards in Buffalo make $20 per hour. The cost of certification is FREE for City of Buffalo residents, ages 16-21, through a grant funded by NYSwims in partnership with Project Play WNY. The cost of certification is $250.00 for non-City of Buffalo residents or City residents over 21 years of age. Applicants of all ages are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility requirements for lifeguard trainees are as follows:

  • People who CAN already swim with proficiency.
  • Must be at least 16 years old by the start of the training course
  • Participants must be able to commit to the full course
  • Attendance is mandatory
