The weird duo known as Angine de Poitrine has blown up all over the internet. I love weird shit like Clowncore and the such. It goes against the grade ALA Primus in my 90’s childhood. Offends the boomers, classic musicians and older crowd. Some dig it some don’t. I’ve been putting it off for a minute seen it pop up every so often. Now I finally gave myself the chance to listen to ADP. The guitarist has a bass on a double neck behemoth on the bottom half of the monstrosity. The drummer has a kick with a few crashes, one small one oddly scrunched up and a tambourine like attachment on the hihat. They’re dressed up in paper machete esque polka dot (Randy Rhoads esque may I add) wrapping paper. It’s quite a sight.
The music is very odd, prog and also microtonal. Random sound effects and great rhythms make the music kooky and interesting. It’s a rather polarizing band if I were to be honest. It’s rhythmically heavy keeping the insanity to a max. The string player loops the bass sometimes probably through a pedal or a board when he uses the guitar. Sometimes he doesn’t use the guitar and plays the bass, sometimes both. I tend to dig this kinda stuff (whether it’s a joke or not) that goes against the pop culture norm of what’s normal in modern day society. And honestly I love the odd microtonal madness of ADP.
It’s refreshing and as goofy as the music is it’s great. I’m not saying they’re groundbreaking like Frank Zappa or King Crimson (you’ll hear that influence here and there) but is still a fun time to my ears. Whether you disagree or not is the point. I haven’t done an opinion piece in a long time, let alone find a chunk of time to do consistent write ups. Shoutout to my contributor John picking up my slack while I’m busy with my band and my promoting newly launched deathfest coming soon on top of work. I actually might have to catch this kooky duo in concert although I know my wife will despise this.
Summarizing my opinion it’s a great refreshing sound in the modern world of AI music, boring pop music, regurgitated hip hop and death metal as well. When weird stuff surfaces, there’s a good chance I’m going to dig it. Angine de Poitrine is an unusually original band where both members are wildly talented. With their two albums (vol. 1 and vol. 2) they play shows, they’re not some social media sensation. I hope the world views them the same way I do and appreciates their music. If not that’s cool too, you like what you like.
