Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski today issued his yearly reminder to pistol permit holders to check their permits to see if they are due to recertify with the New York State Police. Those with concealed carry permits must now recertify every three years, while those with premises restricted permits will continue to recertify every five years. That means those who either received a concealed carry permit or recertified in 2023 must recertify this year by the date of issuance on their permit.
“As I say every year, regardless of how many of us feel about these recertification provisions, it is the law and I do not want to see any law-abiding pistol permit holder put their permit in jeopardy by failing to recertify,” said Jastrzemski, adding that if anyone from previous years has forgotten to recertify, they should do so immediately.
Jastrzemski said those who need to re-certify should go to the State Police recertification website at https://troopers.ny.gov/firearms and scroll to pistol permit recertification. Those renewing should have their pistol permit and driver’s license or non-driver identification available before beginnig the process, as providing specific information from these documents will be necessary.
