Texas is a hotbed for death metal and Architectual Genocide is another reason to support that fact. The brutal death metal outfit is dropping their new record “Malignant Cognition” their first effort in 5 years. It will be out via Comatose Music on January 16th. It’s been well worth the wait. Crushing slams, sharp riffs, punishing vocals and drums make this record go HARD. Their 2020 debut “Cordyceptic Anthropormorph” was a solid album and got me hooked. I got the promo in our email and immediately favorited it. Now, I finally found the time to listen to this behemoth.
The record starts out with a sickening intro that perfectly starts “Malignant Cognition” off on the right foot. Each passing song gets just aggressive and brutal as the previous track. It sits at a virtually perfect 24 minute run time. Sometimes, brutal death metal bands extend their welcome. It’s a quick, straight to the point album with zero filler. Sometimes listening to brutal death metal for 35+ minutes can be exhausting. Unless there’s some crazy Defeated Sanity technicality going on, it can bore some people. For me at least, it kept my attention.
This album was mixed pretty well for the standards of brutal death metal. My only wish is the bass was a little louder. Besides that it sounds real good. The drumming drives this record, not doing too much and far from boring. Lots of speed changes and good fills keep this album grooving charged by the drum work. It all flows together well it’s a must listen for any death metal fan. This pit worthy band will make anybody smash shit up like the Hulk.
